취미, 운동 - 31

나는 야구를 좋아한다. 특히 고등학교 야구 팀들의 경기를 좋아해서 시합이 있을 때마다 빠짐없이 서울운동장에 갈만큼 열성을 피운다. 그렇다고 해서 축구도 싫어하는 편은 아니다.

<표현 연구>

• 나는 야구를 좋아한다: <야구시합을 구경하기 좋아하다>는 뜻이므로 I like to watch baseball games. 나 I am fond of seeing baseball games. 라고 하는 편이 낫다.
• 시합이 있을 때마다: whenever there is a game. 단 (I never fail to visit ~) for most of the matched처럼 처리하는 방법은 한 번 생각해볼만 하다.
• 서울운동장: (야구 그라운드이므로) the Seoul Baseball Ground, the Seoul Stadium(미국에서는 'a ball park'라고 함)
• ~할 만큼 열성을 피운다: be so crazy about ... that ~, be so interested in .... that ~, be so enthusiastic about .... that ~.
• 빠짐없이 가다: 'seldom fail to visit'가 가장 평범함 표현. 동사로 frequent를 써도 좋다. <열성을 피우다>는 'enthusiasm for baseball', 'baseball fever'이다.
• 그렇다고 해서:  nontheless, however, at the same time.
• 싫어하는 편은 아니다: I do not dislike, I do not necessarily dislike, It does not mean that I have no interest in ~. 이밖에도 <야구열 때문에 축구에 대한 관심이 없다는 것은 아니다>로 생각하여 'this does not affect(spoil) my interest in ~'처럼 의역해 볼 수도 있다.
• 축구: soccer.

<구문 연구>

1. 첫 문장을 그대로 'I like to watch ~'로 끓어도 된다. 또는 [야구, 특히 고등학교 경기를 좋아한다]까지를 한 문장으로 묶어 정리해 볼 수도 있다.
2. [~을 너무 좋아해서]는 so~ that 구문이 무난한다.
3. 마지막 부분을 [관심이 없다는 것은 아니다]로 생각하여 'have little interest in~'로 처리한다. cf) interests는 이익, 이자라는 뜻이다. Ex. It is your interests to remain silent. (가만히 있는 것이 너에게 덕이다).

<참고 예문>

• 그는 야구광이다 - He is a baseball fan. He is agolw with baseball fever. He is crazy (enthusiastic) about baseball (games).
• 그는 빠지지 않고 회의에 출석한다 - He regularly attended the meeting, He never missed (failed to attend) the meeting.

<역례>

(1) I like to watch baseball games. As a matter of fact, I am apt tobe so crazy about them, especially those played by highschool teams, that I frequent the Seoul Stadium whenever there is a game. Nontheless, this does not mean that I have little interest in soccer games.

(2) I am very fond of watching baseball games, especially the baseball series of the Highschool Baseball League. I am so enthusiastic about the game that I seldom fail to visit the Seoul Stadium for most of the matches. However, this does not affect my interest in soccergames.
