재해, 질병 - 30
우리 나라에서 년래로 끔찍한 자동차 사고가 빈발하고 있다. 그리고 그 사고의 원인이 대개가 차량정비 소홀로 인한 불완전 차체의 운행에 있는 듯 전해지고 있다. 말하자면 일찌감치 고철로 화하여 없어졌어야 옳았을 차체를 가지고 억지로 운행하다보니 사고가 더 빈발하는 것이다. (시사영어사, 69)
(표현 연구)
년래로 : for yeras(past), (for) some years, these years, during the past few years.
~ 가 빈발하다 : occur frequently, occur at short intervals, be frequent. <자주>의 뜻으로 incessantly(끊임없이)를 써도 된다. <사고가 일어나다>의 <일어나다>는 occur or happen 이 가장 흔히 쓰이고 take place 를 쓸 때도 더러 있다.
그 사고의 원인이 ~ 에 있다 : (우리말 대로) the cause of the accidents lies in ~ / <사고>를 주어로 하면 the accidents are caused y ~ , the accidents arise(start) from ~ , the accidents are attributed to ~ , <불완전 차체의 운행>을 주어로 삼으면 is (chiefly) responsible for the accidents.
대개가 : most (of the accidents) 로 처리하던가 mostly, chiefly 를 적절하게 쓴다. 또는 the chief (main) cause of ~ 처럼 해결하는 방법도 있다.
차량정비의 소홀로 인한 불완전차체의 운행 : 우리말로는 상당히 까다로운 표현이지만 결국 <정비가 잘 안된 불완전한 차량의 운행>의 뜻이다. 즉, the operation of poorly-repaired and defective cars or driving cars in poor(bad) repair and maintenance or driving faulty cars (which need better maintenance 따위처럼 옮기는 편이 낫다.
~ 듯이 전하여지고 있다 : it has been said (claimed) that ... 가 정석적인 표현방식이지만, 부사 allegedly(전하는 바에 따르면) 를 써서 간단히 나타내는 방법도 있다. 신문 기사에서 흔히 쓰는 표현이다.
말하자면 : <(바꾸어 말하면)의 뜻으로 보아> on other words, put in other words, 간단히 말해서 : in short, in a word.
일찌감치 고철로 화하여 없어졌어야 좋았을 차체 : <(오래전에 페차처부닝 되었어야할 형편없는 차)의 뜻이므로> the old(faulty) cars which should hae been (discarded) put out of service long ago the motor-cars which should have been sent already to a junkyard. 가정법과 과거완료형에 쓰는 점에 유의할 것. <폐차 처분하다>는 scrap (discard) a car, put a car out of service, send a car to a junk-yard.
억지로 운행하다 : drive forcibly. <억지로 운향하기>처럼 명사구로 고치면 forcible driving 지나칠 정도로 과도한 운행 : the unseasonable excessive operation, the impossibly unreasonable operation.
(구문 연구)
1. 첫 문장은 a, <자동차 사고>(automobile accidents, traffic accidents)를 주어로 하여 occur 를 동사로 쓴다. b, we 를 주어로 내세워 <빈번히 일어나는 교통사고를 보아 왔다>처럼 옮겨보는 방법도 있다.
2. 둘째번 문장은 a, most of the accidents 를 주어로 삼아 allegedly(reportedly) 를 이용하여 해결한다. b, It has been reported(siad) that ~ 를 선행시켜 옮긴다.
3. <고물차의 억지 운행이 보다 많은 사고의 원인이다>처럼 영어식 패턴으로 고쳐보면 실마리가 잡힌다. 술부는 bring about, result in 따위를 써서 옮기든가, <~에 책임이 있다>로 생각하여 be responsible for ~ 같은 표현을 이용해 볼 수도 있다.

영작.
1. For some years disastrous automobile accidents ahe frequently occurred in our country. It has been reported that most of the accidents are caused (brought about) by the careless operation of poorly-repaired and defective cars. In short, the unreasonable excessive operation of the overage vehicles, which should have been put out of services long ago, was responsible for the ever-increasing auto accidents.
2. During these past few years we have witnesssed the frequent occurrences of terrible traffic accidents in this country. The chief cause of the accidents allegedly lies in driving faulty cars in poor repair and maintenance. In other words, unreasoable foreced driving of the wornout vehicles, which should have been sent to a junkyard long ago, has brought about ever-increasing traffic accidents.
