기후, 계절 - 10

 

14,5년 전까지는 눈만 내리면 산책을 나가지 않고는 못배겼는데 이제 나이가 드니 눈이 와도 바깥에 나가고 싶은 생각이 들지 않는다. 그저 집안에서 바라보고 있는 게 고작이다.

14,5년 전까지는 - until foruteen or fifteen ago.

 

눈이 내리다 : it snows,  the snow comes down, snow falls.

 

산책을 나가다 : go out for a walk(stroll).

 

...지 않고는 못배기다 : cannot(be unable to) restrain oneself from ~ ing, keep oneself from ~ ing, <그냥 방 안에 가만히 앉아 있을 수가 없다>로 생각하여 could not just stay(keep) indoors. 쯤으로 옮길 수도 있다.

 

이제 나이가 드니 : <이 나이가 되니>의 뜻이므로 at my age 정도로 표현해 본다. 또는 'now, being of the age that I am'처럼 쓸 수도 있다.

 

밖에 나가다 : step out of the house(or dodrs), <눈을 맞으러 나가다>는 뜻으로 새겨, go out into the snow.

 

... 하고 싶은 생각이 들다 : feel inclined (to do), have a mind (to do), <...할 생각이 나지 않는다> cannot bring oneself (to do), be in no mood(humor) (to do, for doing), do not feel like (doing). <불현듯 나가고 싶어진다>로 강조하면 take a whim(fancy) for (going out into the snow 도 가능하다. Ex, <그의 집에 잠깐 들려보고 싶은 생각이 들었다> I took a fancy to drop in at his house.

 

바라보다 : gaze at 를 써서 느낌을 살린다.

 

...가 고작이다 : All I do ~ , The only thing I do is ~ .

 

(구문 연구)

 

1. <눈만 내리면 ...>은 <언제나>의 뜻이 내포되어 있으므로 whenever or everytime 으로 이끄는 부사절로 만든다.

 

2. <산책을 나가지 않고는 못배겼다>는 I was unable to restrain myself from going out for a walk or I couldn't keep meself from going out for a walk 가 좋지만 간단히 <나는 늘 산책을 나선다>로 생각하여 I always went out for a walk 만으로도 문의는 충분히 전달된다.

 

3. <...하고 싶은 생각이 들지 않는다>는 <눈>을 주어로 하는 타동사 구문도 한번 생각해 보면 좋겠다. 즉, <눈이 나를 집밖으로 나가도록 설득한다>로 해서 persuage me to ~ 로 보거나 <아무리 푸짐한 눈도 나를 지밖으로 유혹해내지 tempt me to ~ 못하는> 따위로 처리해 본다. 

 

4. <~ 것이 고작이다>는 <내가 하는 일은 그것 ~ 뿐이다>로 고쳐 생각해서 All I do is ~ or The only thing I do is ~ or I confine myself to ~ ing ...(~ 정도로만 하고 그친다) 따위로 표현해 본다.

1. Until fourteen or fifteen years ago, I  was unable to restrain myself from going out for a walk, whenever it snowed. But now, at my age, the snow cannot persuage me to step out of the house. All I do is to gaze at it from indoors.

 

2. Until fourteen or fifteen years ago, I was unable just to stay indoors everytime it snowed, and always went out for a walk. But now,being of the age that I am, no amount of snow could temtp me to step out of doors. I just confine myself to gazing at the snow from inside the house.
