핵심 point) 영어는 5형식만 이해하면 영어 공부 끝났다는 말이 있다. 사역 동사 구문, 지각 동사 구문, 형식 목적어 구문 등이 모두 5형식에 해당한다. 5형식은 S + V + O + O.C로 이루어져 있다. 목적어와 목적 보어의 관계는 주술관계로 이 점을 특히 명심해야 한다.
사역 동사 + O + O.C

핵심 point) It _ before 구문이다. 이 구문은 <_한 후에>로 해석한다. 위 문장에서 it would be a whole year before를 해석하면 <정확히 일년 후에야>가 된다. 일반적으로 영어를 해석할 때 우리글 문장 구조와는 반대이기 때문에 뒤에서부터 해석하는 경우가 많은데 손해가 많다. 시간도 많이 걸리고 영작이나 읽기 그리고 정확히 번역을 하는 데도 걸림돌이 된다.
대표적인 직독직해 구문이며 관용적인 표현으로는 It will not be long before(=soon)가 있다. 직독직해를 잘 하려면 많은 영문 독서가 필요하고 문장을 의미 단위로 끊을 수 있어야 하며 필수 구문 암기가 절대적이다.

핵심 point) 영어는 주어 + 동사의 구조라는 점을 누차 강조하였다. 여기에서는 전치사의 의미상의 주어를 보자. 첫 문장에서 tired of Harry coming에서 전치사 of의 목적어는 coming이고 coming의 의미상의 주어는 Harry이다. 해석을 하면 <해리가 -에서 돌아오는 것에 지친 -가 -하였다>가 된다. 참고로 to-부정사의 의미상의 주어는 for + 목적어이고 동명사의 의미상의 주어는 소유격을 취하지만 요즘은 동명사의 의미상의 주어로 목적격을 쓰는 경우(문두 제외)가 일반적이다.

핵심 point) too + 형용사 +to-inf는 강조 부사 too가 형용사를 강조하고 뒤에 to-inf가 따라 온다. 일반적으로 해석은 <너무 -해서 -할 수 없다>이지만 too가 강조하는 형용사에 따라 to-inf가 긍정으로도 부정으로도 해석된다. 예를 들어 too weak to fight하면 <너무 약해서 싸울 수 없었다>로 되지만 too glad to hug하면 <너무 기뻐서 포옹하였다>라는 뜻이 된다. 마지막 문장을 해석하면 <너무 좋은 것은 오래 지속될 수 없다는 것을 진작 깨달았어야 했다고 해리는 나중에 생각했다>가 된다.

영어는 주어 + 동사의 구조이기 때문에 주어 + 동사를 간결히 표현하려는 성질이 있다. 이 구문도 목적어가 길기 때문에 it라는 형식목적어로 목적어를 대체하고 진목적어를 문미에 둔 구문이다. 해석 요령은 진목적어와 목적보어를 주술관계로 해석하면 된다. thought it best not to argue는 <대꾸하지 않는 것이 최선이다라고 생각했다>가 된다.
